Trackload :
CONDITION MONITORING OF CONTINIOUS WELDED RAILS, INVOLVING THE MEASURMENT AND RECORNING OF TEMPERATURE, SFT (RNT) AND STRESS

Description
The Trackload system is designed to measure (and log) the stress in and the temperature of rail and thence calculate the stress free temperature (temperature at which the stress in the rail goes to zero). It supports up to 4 stress sensors (connected to channels 1 to 4), and 4 temperature sensors (connected to channels 5 to 8), and battery voltage is also displayed. Stress free temperature is calculated from the loads and temperatures according to the rail factor (nominally in tonnes/degrees C), which may be set by the user. When connected to a GSM modem, the system can be used to generate alarms by means of text messages to pre-programmed mobile telephones, or to other alarm/control points.

A serial port is also provided to extract data locally via an RS232 connection to a PC. Data can also be accessed remotely through a dial up Modem/telemetry system.

Operation

The Trackload logger operates a wake/sleep strategy to minimised battery drain. At the interval determined by the Scan Time, it wakes up and takes a set of readings from the 4 stress sensor channels and 4 temperature channels. The software then calculates the stress free temperature based on the above information and the calibration factors stored. If this corresponds to a Log Time, the data is stored in the data logging memory. If pre-set SFT limits are exceeded, an alarm may be raised by means of SMS text messages.


Results

Data is transferred into a PC either by direct connection (RS232) or by modem. The data is then stored in an Excel compatible file format as:

Date, Time, Load 1, Load 2, Load 3, Load 4, Temp 1, Temp 2, Temp 3, Temp 4, SFT 1, SFT 2, SFT 3, SFT 4, Battery Voltage.

A separate file is generated for each day’s data, and facilities are provided to concatenate files together within the PC software.


Calibration
Calibration is carried out on site, or remotely using a PC, by entering Low Scale and High Scale pairs of load and temperature data using the variation in ambient temperature to generate the differential. The calibration coefficients are then stored within the logger for SFT (RNT) calculation.
